Aleya Michaud
48” x 36”, Oil Stick, Acrylic, Soft Pastel, $2200
Aleya Michaud, a Black Acadian artist from New Brunswick, prioritizes the creative process in her art, viewing it as both a classroom and a playground. She explores the relationship between her hands, mind, and heart, fostering self-trust and extending these lessons to everyday life. Her approach begins with spontaneity, allowing simple marks of various mediums, including traditional Chinese ink and acrylics, to guide her towards the finality of each piece.
Based in Riverview, she's an active member of the New Brunswick Black Artist Alliance and serves on the Galerie Sans Nom board. She has exhibited solo works at Galerie Sans Nom and Tidnish Bridge Art Gallery, and participated in group exhibitions at the Gallery on Queen. Her unique approach gained recognition in various publications, including Tourniquet Magazine, and she recently spoke at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, emphasizing the importance of play within creative practice. She is currently Artist in Residence at the Dieppe Arts and Culture Center, expanding on her body of work, Permission to Play.
