Ivan Murphy was born in Quebec City in 1964. After completing high school and CEGEP studies, he attended the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1986, graduating in 1992 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Design.  While working as a graphic designer, Ivan began teaching drawing, illustration, design and colour theory part-time at NSCAD from 1995 to present, and full-time at the Nova Scotia Community College from 1996-1998. Most of Ivan's acrylic paintings reference landscape to frame different narratives.  None of these places exist as depicted in the paintings, though all are derived from very clear memories of isolates or impressions of dream sequences, lending authenticity to the overall impression.`

Ivan Murphy paints full-time in Halifax, and teaches part-time at NSCAD University. Work is represented in private galleries in Halifax, NS, Toronto, ON and Calgary, AB. Public exhibitions include: Mayoral Award Finalist Exhibition, City Hall, Halifax; Mount Saint Vincent Art Gallery; Nova Scotia Museum; Anna Leonowens Gallery; Government House; and the Khyber Centre for the Arts. 

Murphy has been a member of the selection committees for both the Nova Scotia Art Bank Purchase Program and the Nova Scotia Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage. He has received grants from the Nova Scotia Department of Culture in 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2012. In 2009, he was shortlisted for the Halifax Mayor’s Award of Distinction for Contemporary Visual Art, and was invited by the Fine Arts Division at NSCAD to deliver a presentation to students and faculty. As part of the inaugural HRM Public Art competition program, work was selected by jury for the new Prospect Road Community Centre in 2010. 

Murphy’s works are held in numerous public and private collections. Public and corporate collections include the Nova Scotia Art Bank (2006 and 2012); the U.S. Consul General; the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Ottawa; TD Bank, NS; Butterfield Fund Services, NS; Ocean Entertainment, NS; McInnes Cooper, NS; Spectacle Design Inc., NS; Accelerator Inc, NS; and St. Lawrence College, QC.
