“The five works I have presented for “V” represent some new directions in painting which I have been exploring in the last two years. I would consider all five to be narrative works, in that they tell a story of sorts, although the “story” itself can only exist in each viewer.

In “The Gift” and “Horseshoe Crab” I explore interior spaces such as a friend’s laundry room sink and a window ledge of Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre. Both invoke a story/experience about water as both a gift to humans and a necessary ingredient for life as we know it.

“The Traveler”, “The Passage” and “Robyn” include humans which are well known to me but inhabit spaces which are somewhere between real and imagined which I hope are both universal and emotional. Can a space be emotional? Can space in painting and composition imply experiences that we share? These are part of my recent investigations and experiments.” -MacKnight

Theresa MacKnight considers herself a contemporary realist who works mainly in oil painting. She is intensely interested in the place where the materiality of paint, and motif or subject overlap. Her practice is investigative in that she usually works in series to create groups of works which speak to each other both formally and in narrative.

MacKnight studied Fine Art at Mount Allison University and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In addition to her painting practice, she is a lifelong educator, teaching adults and youth throughout New Brunswick. She lives in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, with a deep family roots in rural Charlotte County, a factor which often informs her work.

Theresa exhibits her work in public and private galleries throughout New Brunswick. She has been the recipient of Arts NB grants and several residencies in venues such as The Beaverbrook Art Gallery, KIRA International Residency for the Arts, The River Arts Centre, Florenceville and Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre.
